Zoloft®, an antidepressant prescription drug, has been linked to serious birth defects in babies born to women who haven taken this drug during pregnancy. Research indicates that women who take Zoloft during pregnancy, typically to help with anxiety during pregnancy, may run a greater risk of giving birth to a child with heart birth defects.

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration issued a warning to doctors and patients that exposure to Zoloft during pregnancy has been linked to an increased risk of congenital heart defects, specifically Atrial Septal Defects or Ventricular Septal Defects.

Also, based on a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the FDA issued a warning about the increased risk of Neonatal Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension (PPHN) to babies whose mothers had taken SSRI antidepressants such as Paxil and Zoloft. PPHN causes high blood pressure in the lungs and babies are not able to get enough oxygen into their bloodstream. Even if they receive treatment, 10 to 20 percent of infants end up dying due to this life-threatening disorder.

Who is to Blame?

Zoloft is manufactured by Pfizer, Inc and is used to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic attacks, posttraumatic stress disorder and social anxiety disorder. Generically called Sertraline, it is in a class of antidepressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It works by increasing the amounts of serotonin, a natural substance in the brain that helps maintain mental balance. Indeed, Pfizer, Inc may be to blame and we are investigating their problems.
