Wellbutrin®, an antidepressant prescription drug, has been linked in a recent study to serious side effects in women who take this drug during pregnancy. This study, published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, suggests that women who take Wellbutrin during early pregnancy may run a greater risk of giving birth to a child with a heart birth defect.
The birth defect called a left outflow tract defect, causes interference of the blood flow from the left chamber of the heart to the remaining areas of the body. Such a defect causes a narrowing of the body's main artery and often requires surgical repair.
Wellbutrin is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline and is used to treat Major Depressive Disorder and Seasonal Affective Disorder. Generically call Bupropion hydrochloride; it is marketed as Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin XL, and Wellbutrin XR. Indeed, GlaxoSmithKline may be to blame and we are investigating their problems.
If you or a loved one took Wellbutrin during early pregnancy and had a child born with a birth defect, this side effect may be associated with Wellbutrin. The Buxner Law firm is currently reviewing potential Wellbutrin lawsuits. We handle all Buproprion (Wellbutrin) birth defect cases on a contingency basis.
