On March 4, 2011, The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning informing the public of new data showing there is an increased risk for the development of cleft lip and/or cleft palate deformities in babies born to women who have taken topiramate (Topamax® and its generic equivalents) during pregnancy. It is evidenced that the risk is greatest when the medication is taken during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Topamax is currently used to treat and prevent migraine headaches and epileptic seizures, by creating a calming effect on overexcited nerve cells in the brain. While the product labeling for Topamax already contains information about the risk of birth defects associated with the medication, according to the FDA, the warning label will now be revised to include stronger language that there is "positive evidence of human fetal risk based on human data."

According to Dr. Russell Katz, director of the Division of Neurology Products of the FDA, "Health care professionals should carefully consider the benefits and risks of topiramate when prescribing it to women of childbearing age."
