In October 2010, The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned patients and health care providers about the possible risk of atypical thigh bone (femoral) fracture in patients who take bisphosphonates, sold under the names Fosamax, Fosamax plus D, Actonel, Actonel with Calcium, Boniva, Atelvia, and Reclast.

Known as subtrochanteric and diaphyseal femur fractures, these are fractures in the bone just below the hip joint. While these types of femur fractures appear to account for less than 1% of all hip and femur fractures overall, the FDA said in its warning that these unusual femur fractures have been predominantly reported in patients taking bisphosphonates.

Who is to Blame?

Fosamax is manufactured by the pharmaceutical drug company Merck. While Merck is claiming that there is no "casual link" demonstrated between long-term use of Fosamax and femur fractures, their clinical trials currently only span a 3 to 4 year duration at this point. Indeed, Merck may be to blame and we are investigating their problems.
